MEP Marlene Mizzi co-hosted an event launching the worldwide initiative “Girl2Leader” organised by the Women Political Leaders Global Forum. The initiative was launched in the European Parliament on the International Day of the Girl Child, on the 11th of October, 2017.

Marlene Mizzi said: “The event on the Girl2Leader initiative is co-organised by various MEPs from different political groups. The initiative seeks to get more girls  encouraged to aspire to leadership roles by connecting them with female politicians in their home country. Through our unity on such an important issue, we demonstrated in practice the impact of having more women in leadership positions.”

The initiative also takes place under the distinguished patronage of the President of Malta, H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. The Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) that organised the initiative is a global network of female politicians. The mission of WPL is to increase both the number and the influence of women in political leadership positions.

“We all have an important purpose in life – to make the best possible contributions to the world we are living in, for the global better.  However, although we all have this purpose, women often do not have the same opportunities in life to do so. Women are often not encouraged enough by society to take a leadership positions or to pursue jobs and careers which are predominantly seen as the realm of men. Girls should be encouraged to be ambitious and aspire to leadership positions – whether in politics or in other fields,” said Marlene Mizzi.

“From my personal experience, as having occupied a number of leadership roles usually occupied by men, as well as Malta’s first elected female MEP, I can tell you that women voices will always matter. Women make as good leader as do some men. That is why the launch of #Girl2Leader campaign is extremely important in raising awareness and encouraging young girls to pursue careers as  leaders. Like a domino effect the young girls of today will inspire and empower tomorrow’s young girls around the world!” commented MEP Mizzi.

MEP Mizzi hosted girls from Malta for the launch of the initiative in Brussels in order to introduce them to leadership roles and to show them that  women are also leaders.
